Global internet landmark reached in TelecityGroup Amsterdam as Atrato goes live with world’s first single 100 Gigabit Ethernet connection into Amsterdam Internet Exchange
Atrato IP Networks becomes the first service provider with an operational 100 Gigabit Ethernet connection into a public internet exchange marking the next phase of internet growth
On 10th January 2012 a global milestone was reached when service provider Atrato IP Networks became the first ever organisation to connect into a public internet exchange at a speed of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE). Atrato’s connection into the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) node in TelecityGroup’s Amsterdam South-East data centre is the largest single connection onto any public internet exchange ever achieved globally, and is a significant development for the internet as a whole.
As one of the world’s largest connectivity hubs, Amsterdam continues to see significantly increasing internet traffic. To cater for this growth AMS-IX, the second largest internet exchange in the world, has grown its presence in TelecityGroup’s South-East facility to create its largest and fastest-growing network node with a capacity of over 1,200 Gbps. The presence of this node, combined with a significant number of global and national network operators, made TelecityGroup’s facility the prime location for Atrato to increase the capacity of its network.
Aydin Yildiz, CEO of Atrato, says: “Our successful partnership with AMS-IX has led to an ever-increasing demand for bandwidth with AMS-IX, so the move to grow to 100GE is a logical one. This new large, single connection compounds TelecityGroup’s core position as the most important connectivity hub for Amsterdam, making it the obvious choice for Atrato and any other business for which network density is critical.”
Henk Steenman, Chief Technology Officer AMS-IX: “This new era of development has been facilitated by all three organisations working closely together. Together with TelecityGroup and Atrato we have tested this extensively with customers and it is a great moment to see the 100GE port go into production on our largest data centre node.”
This world first taking place in TelecityGroup’s data centre reinforces its position at the heart of the digital economy. TelecityGroup is soon to open its fifth data centre in Amsterdam, located next to the TelecityGroup South East facility, to meet ongoing demand with a further 6,000 m² of customer space and 9 MW (megawatts) of customer capacity.
“Atrato’s world first – a single 100GE connection at AMS-IX - confirms TelecityGroup as the location of choice for organisations who require a premium environment with rich connectivity options, added to expert customer service,” says Martijn Kooiman, Sales Manager at TelecityGroup Netherlands. “We’re thrilled to achieve another ‘first’ with AMS-IX, whose busiest nodes are hosted in TelecityGroup’s Amsterdam facilities.”
