Marco Matarazzo
Technical team leader, Italy

I joined TelecityGroup in September 2001 as a data centre technician and have worked in a number of different roles. Before joining TelecityGroup, I ran my own company, which provided hardware and software assistance to companies in Naples. I was attracted to TelecityGroup because the concept of its business was so new in Italy at the time. The company had just opened the first carrier-neutral data centre in Italy so it was very exciting to join at this early stage.

Problem solving

As technical team leader, I manage information technology (IT) in TelecityGroup’s Milan data centres, including all the services we provide for our customers, such as IP networking and firewalls. My role is both customer and technology facing: I develop solutions for customers, listen to the challenges they face and help solve them.

My typical day begins with reading all the mails that arrived overnight, and reviewing the activity log and any customer requirements. I then check to see that all the services are working well. After that I usually spend half the day doing pre-sales and developing solutions for customers.  I’m now also spending much of my time working on the ongoing development of our new Milan 2 data centre.

Developing new skills

I enjoy being customer facing because you learn something new every day as each customer has its own individual requirements. Also, working at the leading edge of technology and being able to develop your skills from networking to security is very stimulating. The people and the attitude at TelecityGroup makes it a great place to work and it’s a very exciting environment.
