TelecityGroup completes Amstel Business Park data centre and sets new standard with innovative emergency power supply TelecityGroup, Europe’s industry leading provider of  network-independent data centres, has completed the final construction phase of its latest facility in Amstel Business Park, Amsterdam. The completed Amstel Business Park data centre now offers 4000 square metres and over 8 MW of customer capacity.

The completion of the data centre also marks a global first for the industry, with the introduction of an innovative new emergency power supply design.  New innovation for emergency power technology and design
Emergency power supplies play a critical role in data centre reliability. The power is typically delivered via two separate emergency power supply feeds, in which the second feed acts as a back-up for the first, to ensure that customer services can be maintained in the event of a power outage. In today’s large-area, high-density data centres such as Amstel Business Park, delivering the required levels of emergency power requires considerable engineering design expertise. A standard modern industrial generator can supply about 2.5 MVA but large, high-density data centres often require a minimum of 20 MVA to ensure power requirements can be met in the event of a mains grid outage.  To achieve the power required by the data centre several generators are synchronised. This method, however, creates a new ‘single point of failure’ and requires valuable time to set up.
In order to mitigate the risks connected to such synchronisation, TelecityGroup has developed a new emergency power delivery design. Instead of using the conventional approach of two feeds, TelecityGroup uses six independent and totally galvanically-isolated  feeds  (i.e. fully electrically isolated feeds) – with each feed including a transformer, a UPS with batteries and a generator - to customer racks.
Alexandra Schless, managing director of TelecityGroup Netherlands comments: “We are very pleased to mark the completion of the data centre with this engineering first.  Amstel Business Park is already the most energy efficient data centre in The Netherlands, and our new approach to power management will provide even greater efficiencies and benefits for our customers. The new approach to emergency power delivery offers a level of reliability and availability for customer power provision that is unrivalled in today’s data centre market.”    About Amstel Business Park
The first phase of the Amstel Business Park (1600 m² of client space) was completed in October 2008. This was the first data centre designed to adhere to the strict regulations relating to data centre energy efficiency as set out by Amsterdam City Council in April 2008. In November 2008 TelecityGroup was the first network-independent data centre operator to sign the new EU Code of Conduct for data centres. With the completion of Phase II TelecityGroup Amstel Business Park has at its disposal 4000 m² of client capacity.  In total the four TelecityGroup data centres in Amsterdam have 13,000 m² of client space available. All these data centres comply with the key quality standards and accreditations, such as the ISO-9001, 27001 and PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) and also the new EU Code of Conduct for data centres.
