Spotify chooses TelecityGroup to host music streaming service

Global leader in digital music streaming moves into TelecityGroup’s new Stockholm data centre to improve quality of service for users

7 July 2009: Spotify, the innovative digital music service offering its users on-demand streaming of audio content, has chosen TelecityGroup to provide colocation services in Sweden. The move will provide improved reliability and quality of service for Spotify’s customers in the Nordic region, as the company looks to support its rapidly expanding user base.

Launched in October 2008, Spotify’s service has been hailed as a model for how licensed music content can be effectively monetised. Subscribers download the free application and receive access to a huge library of music, which is shared using a peer-to-peer network alongside streaming servers. In return, subscribers listen to a small amount of advertising. The popularity of the service is growing rapidly, with millions of users across Europe and a music library that continues to add on average 10,000 tracks per day.

Emil Fredriksson, Operations Director at Spotify explains: “We need to guarantee that our infrastructure has enough capacity to support our rapid user growth; both to ensure subscribers receive a good quality of service and also to ensure we have the capacity to add new services in the future. We decided to mirror our existing London data centre in Stockholm as the Nordics is a key market for us.  TelecityGroup offers highly-connected and reliable data centres which will provide the best platform to support our future growth.”

Spotify has taken colocation services at TelecityGroup’s second state-of-the-art Stockholm  data centre, Sköndal.  The premium facility gives Spotify a secure and reliable environment to house its infrastructure, maintained by experienced engineering staff, and direct access to the Swedish Internet exchange Netnod which is also hosted by TelecityGroup. In addition, the Sköndal data centre is one of the most energy efficient facilities in Europe, using innovative design techniques including free-air cooling and energy supplies from renewable and clean sources.

Niclas Sanfridsson, Managing Director of TelecityGroup Sweden, comments: “Spotify has created a unique business model which has proved extremely popular both due to the ease with which subscribers can access the content they want, and the new revenue streams it offers to content owners. To ensure a continued high quality of service, it is crucial for on-demand streaming services to have a highly connected, redundant infrastructure. We’re delighted Spotify has recognised our colocation expertise, and we look forward to working with one of Europe’s most exciting companies.”
