TelecityRedbus to invest £50m in new London data centre
'Powergate’ facility will be one of the most advanced data centres in Europe
London, 19 June 2007: TelecityRedbus, a pan-European operator of network independent data centres, today announced it has begun construction of a new £50m data centre in Central London. The Powergate facility has a planned total power supply of 25 MW and approximately 5,000 m2 of net customer space.TelecityRedbus plans to develop the facility in two phases. The first phase will provide approximately 2,500 m2 of net customer space with a total power supply of up to 12.5 MW (of which 5 MW will be available to customers), and is expected to be ready for occupancy during Q2 2008. The second phase, which is expected to begin in 2009/2010, will add approximately 2,500 m2 of net customer space with an additional power supply of 12.5 MW (of which 5 MW will be available to customers).
On completion, Powergate will be TelecityRedbus’s eighth data centre in London. The facility will be supported by advanced power and cooling technology to maximise energy-efficiency.
The new data centre is required to support the growing demand for high-quality data centres in the UK, and specifically in London. Currently the supply of data centre capacity is constrained, particularly in London, driving the requirement for further space.
The facility will offer connectivity to major telecoms and network service providers, and be connected to TelecityRedbus’s European data centres by the TelecityRedbus fibre network. In addition LINX, the London Internet Exchange, will have a live presence on the site from its launch, offering global peering and connectivity options for customers.
"The popularity of London as a place to connect Internet networks has helped drive enormous demand for carrier-independent data centre space,” comments John Souter, CEO, LINX. “We are delighted to see our partner, TelecityRedbus, moving to meet this demand allowing us to maintain the aggressive growth we've seen in London in recent years."
"Building on our long-standing and close relationship with TelecityRedbus, I look forward to the London Internet Exchange building a point of presence in this new facility to service our members’ requirements in the future."
Mike Tobin, CEO of TelecityRedbus, states: “The demand for data centre space is rapidly increasing as the convergence between the media, enterprise and telecom markets continues. TelecityRedbus data centres provide an important meeting point for the exchange and delivery of online content for enterprise and consumer applications. Our investment in this new site, which will be the first in central London for several years, demonstrates our commitment to providing our customers with the highly secure space, facilities, services and connected environment they require to support the growth in their business requirements. It is also an important step in keeping London at the forefront of the global internet market.”
